RUBY WASN’T SO SURE that was the wisest course of action. “What do you think they could possibly do that we can’t? Besides worry, that is. I mean, you have the best access to the Goddess of all of us. If you can’t figure out where she’s gone, how could they? And it will take their mind off what’s at hand too.”

I took one hand off the wheel to tuck a stray strand of hair behind my ear. “But don’t you think they have a right to know? I mean, George was going to visit the Shaman because of this. What if that’s what got him killed?”

Ruby was quiet for a few seconds, her face turned out the window of the car. “I don’t think that’s what happened, though, do you? Really?” She turned back toward me. “I mean, if it is gods and goddess related, then wouldn’t the killer be magically inclined? I don’t know a single witch that carries a gun.”

I took a deep breath. “Patty does.”

Ruby grunted. “That’s just because she’s the sheriff now. It’s a job requirement. She never did before, did she?”

I had to give her that. “No. Not that I know of.” But I still wasn’t ready to let go of this strain of thought just yet. “What if the killer thought of that too? What if they shot George to throw us off the scent?”

Her fingers drummed on the dashboard. She hadn’t thought about that.

“I still say we wait. Let’s figure out who killed George and why. Then you and I will take an extended trip to the Goddess tree and find out just what the heck is going on. Deal?”

I shook my head. “I really think we need to tell them, Ruby. What if it is all related? Then this becomes need-to-know information.”

She blew out a long breath. “I don’t think it is related. And I don’t think you really do, either. I just think you want to relieve some of the burden of the knowledge by sharing it with the others. I also don’t think that’s going to help the situation one bit. Or lesson our personal burdens, either. It’s just going to cause them to be more unfocused. And that can be dangerous.”

“It can be just as dangerous to have helpful information kept from you.”

The car went silent. Well, okay, so the car was still humming along, but Ruby and I stopped talking for a few miles.

Finally, she turned to me. “What’s that thing that Orville and Trevor do when they argue about something?”

The car swerved slightly as I stared at her. “You want to solve this debate with Rock, Paper, Scissors?”

She shrugged. “It’s as good as anything, isn’t it?”

I chewed my lip for a minute, then pulled over to the side of the road. “All right, then. Let’s do this.”

We each held up a fist. “On three.” One, two, three, and our fists opened.

Ruby’s eyes gloated into mine. She’d went with scissors when I’d gone with paper. I’d been that sure she’d go with rock.
